Mesothelium:
It
is the thin layer that covers and protect many internal organs of our body.
Mesothelioma:
It
is a rare form of cancer affecting mesothelium. It is an aggressive form of
cancer. It is further classified different types based on what part of the
mesothelium is affected.
Pleural mesothelioma:
Pleural mesothelioma from inhaling phase to lung cell damage and tumor growth phase |
It
most often starts in the covering of lungs which is called pleural
mesothelioma. When someone inhaled asbestos fibers, these lodge in mesothelium tissue. These fibers cause cellular damage that results in tumor growth. Chest pain under the rib cage Other symptoms include:
- Painful coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Unusual lumps of tissue under the skin on your chest
- Unexplained weight loss
Peritoneal mesothelioma:
When
mesothelioma starts in the abdomen. Its Symptoms include:
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal swelling
- Lumps of tissue in the abdomen
- Unexplained weight loss
Common Causes:
Asbestos
is a mineral that founds naturally in the environment. It is a group of
minerals with thin microscopic fibers. In the mining process or in the process
of removing asbestos insulations, these fibers are released in the air. Inhaling
or swallowing these fibers leads to serious health problems. As many as 75% of
mesothelioma cases can be linked to exposure to asbestos at work.
Other Causes:
Zeolites:
These are minerals. Erionite is one of them that is common in the soil in some
areas of Turkey. Exposure to erionite is believed to be responsible for high
rates of mesothelioma in those areas.
Radiation:
A few published reports of mesotheliomas that developed following exposure to
high doses of radiation to the chest or abdomen or after injections of thorium
dioxide (Thorotrast).
SV40
virus: According to American Cancer Institute, some laboratory animal studies have
raised the possibility that infection with the simian virus 40 (SV40) might
increase the risk of developing mesothelioma.
Genetics:
According to some experts, some people may be genetically predisposed to
mesothelioma.
